This presentation will discuss accommodation model of feeding difficulties and role of family behaviors in maintaining feeding difficulties, including coercive feeding practices, accommodation, and avoidance. In addition, cultural differences in feeding practices will be reviewed and presenters will discuss communication strategies to modify treatment plans to be culturally sensitive and meet families where they are at.

Learning Objectives:
1) Define role of family behaviors, including coercive feeding practices, accommodation, and avoidance in maintaining restrictive eating behaviors
2) Recognize cultural differences in feeding practices including mealtime environment, feeding expectations, and culturally appropriate foods
3) Identify communication strategies to develop culturally sensitive treatment plans for children with pediatric feeding disorders

This Zoom-delivered continuing education event is hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Maternal and Child Health Nutrition training program which is housed in the Division of Adolescent Medicine of the Department of Pediatrics at UAB.

The purpose of this series is to improve the nutritional status of infants, children and adolescents by updating pediatric health professionals in the nutritional assessment and management of pediatric populations with nutrition challenges.

The series is designed for dietitians, diet technicians, and other health care professionals who are interested in enhancing their pediatric nutrition knowledge and skills.

Continuing Education: Twelve Continuing Education Credits have been requested from the Commission on Dietetics Registration and from the Nursing accrediting body. All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance and full agenda with objectives, which can be presented to their respective continuing education accrediting bodies if pertinent.
